child killed in baby seat
Corinne Burgwin had fitted the baby seat with the child facing forwards instead of facing backwards, and with the seat restrained by the main seatbelt. This meant that when the accident happened the occupant was thrown forward and into contact with the seatbelt.
The baby suffered fatal injuries to her chest. Had the baby seat been fitted correctly i.e. facing forwards and correctly positioned, the baby is likely to have been uninjured.
Burgwin was driving without a licence or insurance and a custodial sentence is expected.
Baby seats are designed to absorb any impact following an accident. Indeed, manufacturers say that when a car containing a baby seat is involved in an accident, the baby seat must be replaced, as the seat may have sustained damage not apparent to the casual observer. Many organisations provide a service for checking that a baby seat is correctly fitted to a car.
