If a UK employer does not provide any or all of the following, the employer is liable to pay compensation to an employee who suffers an accident at work as a result.
Employers must provide:
- A safe way for an employee to carry out their work. This means that the employer must ensure that your work is carried out in the safest possible way for the type of job you do. An employer must tell an employee if the employee will encounter dangers or hazards in the performance of their job. Training must be provided to enable the employee to deal correctly with the hazards he or she may encounter.
- Safe premises for an employee in which to work. All obvious causes of danger such as wet floors, trailing electrical cables and other items left in walkways, must be dealt with by the employer.

- Competent staff. Your employer must ensure, to the best of his ability, that your work colleagues are competent. If they act in ways that could cause you harm, suffer from certain conditions that may have an impact on you or put you at risk by their behaviour, your employer may be at fault.
